JEPLAN, INC. (Representative Director, President, and Chief Executive Officer: Masaki Takao; hereinafter “JEPLAN”) and the City of Nagasaki (Mayor: Shiro Suzuki) concluded a partnership agreement on the promotion of horizontal recycling on Saturday, November 23.
In February 2022, Nagasaki City and JEPLAN Group company PET REFINE TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. (President & Chief Executive Officer, Daigo Iga) signed a "Memorandum of Understanding for a Demonstration Project for the Complete Recycling of PET Bottles" and are collaborating on horizontal PET bottle recycling (bottle-to-bottle). (See Figure 1). (See Figure 1) We have also made various efforts, including the development of an original regional bottle of "Nagasaki Tap Water" to help citizens understand the importance of resource recycling through bottle-to-bottle horizontal recycling. With the conclusion of this collaboration agreement, we will also cooperate with JEPLAN to realize a recycling-oriented society through cooperation in citizen-participatory events for the purpose of environmental education and awareness, resource recycling of clothing, and other activities.
The JEPLAN Group is working with consumers, companies, and local governments to collect unwanted clothing and PET bottles, and to recycle limited resources through reuse and various recycling technologies. With the conclusion of this agreement, we will not only cooperate in the horizontal recycling of PET bottles, but will also collaborate in efforts to recycle clothing resources. As part of this effort, at the "Nagasaki Ecolife Festa 2024," a clothing collection box was set up at the venue to collect unwanted clothing from local residents. In addition, event staff members wore T-shirts made of recycled polyester resin, which was recycled using JEPLAN's proprietary technology. Through these efforts, JEPLAN aims to promote resource recycling in the entire community by making participants realize that their own familiar actions are connected to resource recycling and encourage them to be more proactive in waste separation and collection and recycling.
In the future, the JEPLAN Group will continue to work together with domestic and overseas partners to realize its mission of "We circulate our world," and the group as a whole will strive to drive the circular economy forward.
■ Development of original regional circulating bottles
We plan to roll out the second version of the "Nagasaki-Tap Water"*1 , a regional original recycling bottle announced in 2023, by April 2025 (planned).
This bottle is made from PET resin recycled from used PET bottles using the JEPLAN Group's proprietary PET chemical recycling technology. Collected used PET bottles are broken down to the molecular level, impurities are removed, and the PET resin is recycled to the same quality as petroleum-derived PET resin, making it possible to recycle the bottles again and again.
