JEPLAN, INC. (Representative Director, President, and Chief Executive Officer: Masaki Takao; hereinafter “JEPLAN”) and Kushiro City, Hokkaido (Mayor: Hidenori Tsuruma) have jointly produced and redesigned the collection bags used to collect PET bottles from households, with the aim of promoting bottle-to-bottle recycling. In conjunction with this, a presentation ceremony was held on Friday, January 31, and the original design for the collection bags, as well as a trophy for the “Welcome Back PET Bottle Action” initiative, which is promoted by JEPLAN and involves recycling PET bottles back into PET bottles, were presented to Kushiro City, and the newly designed collection bags were also unveiled.
JEPLAN and Kushiro City have jointly announced the renewal of the collection bags, which are designed with the JEPLAN bee mark, a symbol of resource recycling, in order to make bottle-to-bottle recycling more familiar to the public. Kushiro City collects PET bottles discharged from ordinary households using special collection bags installed at resource collection points. Through the renewal of these collection bags, Kushiro City aims to make citizens aware of the importance of "collecting" PET bottles for resource recycling, rather than "throwing" them away. The collection bags will be installed at approximately 3,500 resource collection sites in the city starting around February. The collected PET bottles will be decomposed to the molecular level using the JEPLAN Group's proprietary technology to remove impurities such as pigments and metals, and recycled into recycled PET resin of the same quality as that derived from petroleum, which will then be used again as raw materials for PET bottles and other products.
In March 2022, JEPLAN and Kushiro City concluded a comprehensive cooperation agreement on the "Promotion of Regional Recycling and Symbiosis Zone. Under this agreement, JEPLAN and Kushiro City have been engaged in various activities, including collaboration in bottle-to-bottle recycling, citizen-participatory events to communicate the importance of resource recycling, and classes on PET bottle recycling at elementary schools. We will take the opportunity of the renewal of the collection bags to further promote resource recycling.
In the future, the JEPLAN Group will continue to work together with domestic and overseas partners to realize its mission of "bringing everything into circulation," and the group as a whole will strive to drive the circular economy forward.

The JEPLAN Group is promoting bottle-to-bottle recycling initiatives in cooperation with local governments throughout Japan. Our goal is to create a society in which objects that have fulfilled their roles are no longer garbage but are recycled as valuable resources. As part of this initiative, we are implementing the "Welcome Back PET Bottle Action," an activity to collect PET bottles and recycle them back into PET bottles. In Japan, approximately 640,000 tons*1 of PET bottles are manufactured and sold annually. The recycling rate is about 85%(*2). However, only about 34%(*3) of PET bottles are recycled as PET bottles. We aim to recycle the remaining 66% of these bottles as bottle-to-bottles, and are working to further promote resource recycling. |
