JEPLAN, INC. (Representative Director, President, and Chief Executive Officer: Masaki Takao, hereinafter "JEPLAN") has been selected to implement a grant project (hereinafter “this project”) for a pre-demonstration survey for the “International Demonstration Project for Japanese Technology Contributing to Decarbonization and Energy Transition” publicly solicited by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization), and a research grant was awarded in December 2024. In response to this, on February 12th 2025, NEDO's Director Iimura handed over the notice of grant decision.

In this project, JEPLAN will utilize its proprietary PET (polyethylene terephthalate) chemical recycling technology to prepare a demonstration study for the establishment of a recycling supply chain in the United Arab Emirates (hereinafter "UAE"). In December 2023, prior to the start of this project, we concluded a research consignment agreement with NEDO to conduct a feasibility study on the establishment of a recycling supply chain in the UAE (feasibility study on conformity with demonstration requirements, etc.)*1. In this study, the appropriateness and marketability of the demonstration technology, as well as the procedures for commercialization in the UAE were investigated, and the economic feasibility of the project was evaluated.

JEPLAN, INC. is a group company of PET REFINE TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. (hereinafter "PET REFINE TECHNOLOGY") that operates a chemical recycling plant for PET bottles, which is one of the few such plants in the world. PET REFINE TECHNOLOGY uses proprietary technology to break down waste PET down to the molecular level using used PET bottles as raw material, and then removes impurities such as dyes and metals to recycle it into recycled PET resin of the same quality as that derived from petroleum. This contributes to reducing the use of new underground resources, as well as reducing CO2 emissions*2. JEPLAN is promoting the development of businesses and the licensing of this proprietary technology both in Japan and overseas. Overseas, there is a wide variety of waste PET that is difficult to recycle due to contamination or different processing conditions, and if it were possible to recycle this into high-quality PET resin again, it would lead to a reduction in the use of resources and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

This project aims to promote recycling of PET bottles and other materials overseas by utilizing JEPLAN's accumulated experience and technologies. In addition, in order to demonstrate the feasibility of supplying price-competitive products in the UAE energy supply environment, JEPLAN will confirm the validity of the technology and prepare performance targets and an implementation plan. Furthermore, we will confirm the procedures necessary to implement the demonstration study and compile the results as a commercialization evaluation by the end of 2025.

The JEPLAN Group will continue to work together with domestic and overseas partners to realize its mission of "bringing everything into circulation," and the entire group will strive to drive the circular economy forward.

NEDO " International Demonstration Project on Japan's Technologies for Decarbonization
and Energy Transition "(https://www.nedo.go.jp/activities/AT1_00175.html)
This project will lead to the diffusion of demonstration technologies through overseas demonstration of Japan's advanced technologies that contribute to the realization of S+3E (Safety, Stable Supply, Economy, and Environmental Compatibility). Furthermore, the project aims to return the results to Japan through demonstrations in overseas energy markets that are systematically ahead of Japan. Through these efforts, the project will contribute to the diffusion and development of Japan's energy-related industries, energy transformation and decarbonization in Japan and abroad, and energy security in Japan.

JEPLAN, INC. (https://www.jeplan.co.jp)

Representative: Masaki Takao, Representative Director, President, and Chief Executive Officer Established: January 2007

Main Business: PET chemical recycling technology-related business (targets: PET bottles and polyester), etc.

JEPLAN is widely involved in the supply chain and promotes manufacturing, business development, and technology licensing using its proprietary PET chemical recycling technology, thereby realizing the recycling of limited resources and contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions. In 2017, we began operating the Kitakyushu Hibikinada Plant (annual production capacity of 1,000 tons), which manufactures and sells recycled polyester resin made from used clothing. Also in 2018, we acquired a commercial plant Pet Refine Technology (annual production capacity 22,000 tons, official website: https://www.prt.jp) in Kawasaki, Japan, which resumed operations in 2021. Using chemical recycling technology, of which there are few commercial examples in the world, the company manufactures and sells recycled PET resin, which is mainly used as a raw material for PET bottles, from waste PET bottles and other materials. PET Refine Technology has more than 10 years of experience in plant operation. Taking advantage of this business, the entire JEPLAN Group is engaged in a resource recycling business (bottle-to-bottle) in which PET bottles are recycled over and over again, in cooperation with local governments and companies.
